Darshanshastra is the starting point for understanding the significance of any of the ancient Indian scriptures. Yoga Shastra, Jyotish, Vāstu Shastra, Ayurveda and Sangeeta have their origins in Darshanshastra. They are known as Upangas.
Vāstuis a study of Indian origin, which is untouched and unharmed from any external influences. Precisely, great Panchataras –Jyotish,Vāstu, Vedantā, Yoga and Ayurvedahave all emanated out of vedas and its auxiliaries. These studies are inter-related and inter-dependent. There are similar studies prevalent in other countries by different names. In China,Fengshuiis a renowned allied science and in Germany, it is known byBou Biology. The Indian Vāstu is a unique amalgamation of knowledge from the Vedas,
Vedic philosophy, religion, design and instinct. The aim of Vedic Vāstu is to create harmony with nature and the laws of the cosmos. Through this creation,Prakriti (Nature) and Puruç (human) become as close as possible. This is the reason why Vāstu helps tobring peace and tranquility in a human’s life.
Vāstu is a holistic science which encompasses the entire field of manifestationof incidents and events and further, can change one’s cosmic path which may lead to security, stability and success.
The traditional Vedic Vāstu is evolved through penance of the eighteen divine maharishis. The Great Seers and maharishi such as RishiBhrigu, Atri, Vishakarma, Maya Matanga,Kashya and Vasishtha are the founders of this ancient science. Vāstu is an age-oldsubject which is scattered in various traditional texts. In the beginning, we understand Vāstu as ‘Ghata -Ghatana –Ghatakash’, just as in astrology, where we acknowledge the significance of ‘Desha-kala-Patra’.In Jain philosophy, many aagams are devoted to this science.
Origin of Vāstu Shastra can be understood by understanding the cosmic form called ‘Shivalinga kruti’.’Shivlingakruti is cosmic symbol which showers peace, prosperity and bliss, signified by the wordsSatyam, Shivam, Sundaram.
The matter encompassing energy is ‘shakti’ which is present in the North or the East directions. It is low, light and open which gives us the clarity that the north and the east of a space should be low in ground level, light in gross mass and more open to sky.Whereas, the form of the ‘shiva– linga’ depicts the south and the west, which is high, heavy and less or completely packed. In other word, thisis the sink zone, which should be higher and heavier than the North and the East direction of any space, and should be less open to sky or completely packed.
The complete concept of Vāstu Shastra can be understood throughthis cosmic symbol of‘Shivalinga’, where matter explodes into dynamic energy and forces to travel in the ‘Mandalakar path’. It helps us to understand the ‘Ten Commandments’ in Vāstu on which the structure planning is done for building. To achieve resonance with natural law, the first in creating a vāstu structure is to locate a suitable placeon the Earth for it.
The chief elements of the site selection are:
- Complete orientation of the structure and the shape of the land or site one wants to construct.
- Slope of the land needs to be well analysed and adjacent topography.
- Observing and understanding the natural elements on the land and nearby.
- Examine the roads around the site.
- Test the soil condition. How fertile the land is or presence of underground water in the site.
- Understanding the relation of Pranic and Jeevic urga.Relation of the structure to the eastern horizon.
- Check the existence of human created elements.
- Landscape trees and shrubs.
- The next consideration for the vastu structure is the Vastu Purusha Mandala. To divide the site into Parama Saayika Vastu Mandala. Then to build the wall and roof of a building by aligning the structural to thegeometry of the vastu mandala.
10) An important factor which cannot be ignored in the vastu design is the location of the main entry door, the main for the owners at the front of the structure.
Several methods are there to rectify various defect present in a site.
Vāstu through Svara and Mantra Sastra
Let us proceed to a topic of Rectification of Vāstuthrough Svara and Mantra Sastra:
‘Sivasvarodaya’ is an ancient Sanskrit text of great importance and the only one extent elucidates the science of predicting auspicious and inauspicious result based on the flow of the breathing through one or the other nostril. It was initiallyrevealed by Lord Shiva to his divine consort Parvathi with specific instructions to keep it closely guarded, a secret, which would be revealed only to those who deserve it.
Method of knowing the Svara
‘Svaras’ are the origin of life, the left nasal passage is called Ida and the right nostril is Pingala .The middle passage is called Susumna. The use of IdaSvara,Pingala svara or Susumna svara gives flow of energy, rise and fall of pressure in the body. All the Puranas, Smrtis, Vedangas and tantra have originated from Svara .This science of Svaradaya is superior to all other sciences. Just as one needs a torchlight in order to see the things, this knowledge helps us to proceed towards the path of enlightenment. This knowledge can be used by mankind to rectify their bodily defects and space around them, thus facilitating the study of Vāstu.
